concrete grades and thier uses.

concrete grades are M5, M7.5, M10, M15, M20, M25, M30, M35, etc.

Here M refers to mix ratio and the number refers to (here example 5) compressive strength of concrete after 28 days. which is cast in 150mm X150mm X150mm size cube and expressed in N/mm2 (newtons per meter square)

Let's discuss this in detail. but before that, I request you to please also check our posts thanks.

Concrete grades are divided into four types:-

1. lean concrete

2. ordinary concrete

3. standard concrete

4. high strength concrete

LEAN CONCRETE:-

here M5 to M10 are called poor concrete. because in these grades of concrete the amount of water is greater than the amount of cement.

M5 GRADE:-

As we discussed earlier, in this grade the Quantity of cement is less than the water quantity. So it is not strong.

The mix ratio of this grade is 1: 5: 10 ( cement : sand: coarse aggregate )

it is mainly used for leveling the surface in the foundation. it prevents the contact between steel with ground in foundation footing.

M7.5 GRADE:-

this grade is also similar to the M5 grade.

the ratio of this grade is 1:4:8  ( cement : sand: coarse aggregate )

It is used for leveling the surface of footings and for bedding purposes.

ORDINARY CONCRETE:-

M10 to M 20 are called ordinary concrete grades.

M10 GRADE:-

Ratio of this grade i,e ( cement : sand : aggregates ) is 1:3:6

it is used as a PCC which is plain cement concrete. it is used for leveling the footings and leveling the concrete roads.

M15 GRADE:-

the ratio of this grade is 1:2:4 ( cement: sand: aggregates )

It is used as PCC ( plain cement concrete ) which means it can not be used in reinforcement structures like beams, slabs, footings. but it can be used as a bed for footings and for leveling courses.

M20 GRADE:-

it can be used in RCC ( reinforced cement concrete ) examples for beams, slabs, footings...

the ratio of this grade is 1:1.5:3

STANDARD GRADE CONCRETE:-

M25 to M55 are called standard concrete grades.

M25 GRADE:-

1:1:2 is the ratio of this grade concrete. it is used in RCC. like beams, columns, footings... etc

M30 GRADE:-

It is a design mix concrete. the proportions vary from structure to structure. the proportions are determined by the amount of load required for a particular structure.

as per codal provision IS 1602-2009

The remaining M35 to M50 are the same as we discussed above.

HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE GRADES:-

These high-strength concretes are used for RCC structures, where high strength is required. such as high-rise buildings and heavy bridges and long-span bridges and dams, spillways, etc...

M60 to remaining grades are high strength concrete grades.
